Secret Supper | Thicket

A couple weeks ago, I hosted my second Secret Supper of 2016! This year all of our suppers have a distinct theme, and this one was Thicket. For us, Thicket represented a celebration of spring. The food was vibrant and colorful, the backdrop was fresh and green and yes, even the weather was temperamental and a little wet: a true testament of Spring in the Pacific Northwest! We held our dinner in a beautiful grove of birch trees at the wonderful Hood River Guest House. Co-hosting with me again were Eva, Christiann and Mona + Jaret of Tournant. We also had the amazing and generous help throughout the entire weekend of our volunteers: LenaMakiAaronValentinaHollyAlexEmmaAlanna and my amazing sister-in-law, Jennifer who came from Minnesota to help! 

Because of the spring theme, we wanted our guests to dine seated on the ground. We decided to use old reclaimed doors for our tabletops and I couldn't be more happy with how well they worked and how cute they were all put together as one big, 70 foot long table! They were adorned with beautiful florals by Selva Floral and drop dead gorgeous custom menus printed on linen by Amy Rochelle Press. The guests dined on top of Will Leather Good's Oaxaca woven rugs and pillows for comfort.  The day was full of off and on light showers, which caused us to set up and take down the table a couple times, and also an hour or so of holding tarps above the table to keep everything dry. Thankfully, by the time guests arrived in the early evening, the clouds parted and we had a beautiful June evening.

The food for this supper was all Moroccan themed and was so colorful and delicious. The guests were treated with a marrionberry sage gin cocktail made by Christiann and two fresh and vibrant appetizers made by Eva. We sourced local free-range lamb from Sudan Farms for the main course and Mona and Jaret prepared it two ways. One was roasted whole, on an iron cross over a wood fire and brushed with a rosemary herb brush and the other was braised in savory schwarma  spices in Staub Cocotte's over the hot coals. I paired the lamb with Syncline's Mourvèdre which was a perfect pairing! The highlight of the dinner for me was Mona's Middle Eastern Wedge Salad. It was little gem lettuces with the most amazing flavor and topped with za'atar 'ranch' dressing, Vermont Creamery feta, dates, and pistachios. I paired this salad with COR Cellars Alba, which is a Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer white wine. The creamy feta and spicy dressing was balanced perfectly by the acidity of the wine and it was a crisp and yet creamy combination. My mouth is watering for this just reliving this moment!
